10 Unique & alternative yorkshire wedding venues

I love couples who aren't afraid to break tradition, do something daft, wear something different and generally have as much fun as possible on their wedding day. But before you can get hitched, you need to find somewhere to do it! So I've compiled a list of some wicked awesome Yorkshire wedding venues for those of you looking to break away from boring! Some of these venues I've shot weddings at, some I'm shooting at in 2018 or 19, and others I'd LOVE to shoot at! So have a nosey and if you're on the hunt for a cool Yorkshire wedding venue, I hope this inspires you!

1. Scampston Hall

Wedding guests outside a tipi in the gardens of Scampston hall in Yorkshire

Scampston Hall & Gardens is for sho one of my favourite places in Yorkshire. If you've read my Me & You section, you'll have seen that I'm also a book cover photographer! When I was getting started in the world of book cover photography in early 2016, after contacting a whole bunch of other stately homes in the area, Scampston came through for me and let me do a Regency era shoot there in exchange for photographing a vintage event for them. I've since done another book cover shoot and a wedding there, and I honestly can't rate it highly enough. The owners and the staff are just the most friendly & accommodating people you could hope to meet. Nothing is too much trouble for them and it's without a doubt one of my favourite places to work, whatever the job. Although the house itself is a very traditional setting for a wedding, the gardens are immense and that's exactly where Rebecca & Chris pitched up their Bar Events UK tipi and had one of THE funnest weddings I've ever been a part of. You can't go wrong with Scampston!

2. The Forbidden Corner

Now here's one I'm bladdy excited about! I'm booked to shoot a wedding at The Forbidden Corner in Middleham, North Yorkshire in August 2018 and I can't wait! I mean look at it... I can't even! The wedding ceremony itself witll take place at The Saddle Room. I'll be able to update this post next summer with more info about weddings at The Forbidden Corner, but if you're looking for a quirky and original place in Yorkshire... you found it! Watch the video above for more...

3. Fishlake Mill

My awesome bride Claire stumbled on Fishlake Mill through a search for unique Yorkshire wedding venues, so hopefully this will help more people to find it! I shot Claire & Paul's tea party themed wedding here back in September. What a cool place! It has a super cute pond out the back, guests sat on hay bails outside during the ceremony and they have a permanent marquee just to the left of what you see in this photo, which comes fully equipped with a bar and dance floor. There's an area beside the marquee for a hog roast, and it has a resident peacock! The building above is the old windmill itself which is very cool inside. It's been extended out the back, and bridal parties can stay here the night before the wedding, while the bride & groom can stay the night of the wedding. There's also a tree swing and loads of room for garden games. I didn't get to meet or talk to any staff/the owners but everything ran super smoothly! A very cool Yorkshire wedding venue.

4. Camp Katur

Oh the colourful woodland ceremony dream! Good grief, it's too awesome for words. Camp Katur is definitely one of my dream alternative wedding venues in Yorkshire to shoot a wedding at. Located at The Camp Hill Estate in Bedale, North Yorkshire, Camp Katur sits in a 250 acre country estate and boasts a glamping & camping village, an eco spa, a nordic BBQ cabin and a cafe. As they say on their website, they "have minimal restrictions and are open to the wackiest of suggestions"... that's my kinda place! If it's yours, give them a shout ASAP with your date because I've no doubt they get fully booked and quickly!

5. North Shire

Here's a venue that looks like fun! Voted one of the 50 best cottages in Britain by The Times, North Shire is definitely one of Yorkshire's most quirky and alternative wedding venues! It's a family run farm in Cleveland, North Yorkshire and only 15 minutes from Whitby. Accommodation includes The Shire House, Storybook Cottage, Gypsy Bow Top Wagons and a Shepherd's Hut. (Note - they are not registered for licensed ceremonies)

6. Dalby Forest

Oh Yorkshire, you really spoil us with SO MUCH AWESOME WOODLAND! Am I obsessed? Probably. But if you're gonna get married in Yorkshire, why not get married right in the depths of Yorkshire in the beautiful Dalby Forest!

"At £780 inc. VAT Dalby is one of the lowest priced venues in the area."

Dalby is in The Great Yorkshire Forest in The North York Moors. I've cycled through it and zip lined through the trees at Dalby's Go Ape, and can confirm that if you love the woods... you're gonna wanna get hitched here! The ceremony can be held on the outside terrace overlooking the trees and they're partnered with Woodland Weddings who can provide tipis, glamping and all sorts.

7. York Maze

As a wedding photographer who lives just outside York, York Maze is obvs another one of my dream unique Yorkshire venues to shoot at! However, don't hang about if you're interested in this venue, because they only book weddings in during April, May and June! From what I can see as I write this post (on 8th Dec 2017) there are two available weekends remaining in 2018, one at the start of April and one in June! Go go go! If you're booking a 2019 wedding, you're golden... for now! :)

Never has it been easier to organise a piss up in a brewery. I live at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, and can confirm that they are a thing of beauty. You probably hear people talk about the Dales or the Moors when they reference Yorkshire, but if you've never been to the Wolds, you're missin' out, yo! Muddy Souls Events at the Wold Top Brewery are a venue worth checking out for beer and views. They're fully booked for 2017 and 2018 but get in touch with them for 2019!

9. BarmbyField Barns

Ahhhh Barmbyfield Barns... the venue so close to me I could roll out of bed, shoot your wedding and climb back in! I have two weddings booked in at Barmbyfield Barns, and I can't wait to shoot them! I walk my dog past this venue a fair bit, I love the road it's on and it's set right back in the middle of the fields. It just looks like a little toy house as you glance at it. You'd never guess that this incredible wedding venue was hiding back there. I've been in to meet the owner and have a nosey around and it's seriously dreamy. As of today they have 4 weekend dates left available in 2018, but more in 2019, so don't hang about! And if you're looking for local accommodation, I highly recommend my friend Ruth's holiday cottages and shepherd's huts at Wolds Edge (I've stayed in them, they're uhhhmazing!)

And last but not least in the 10 unique Yorkshire wedding venues is The Scarborough Fair Collection! Because FAIRGROUND RIDES.
As the website says...
"Graham Atkinson has built up one of the largest and finest collections of working steam Showman’s Engines, Vintage Cars, Miniature Vehicles, Fairground rides and Mechanical Organ’s in the UK and we believe the “Scarborough Fair Collection” will provide a unique setting for your Wedding Reception..."

It's just super cool. Check it out.
